This finely crafted teacup is made by the historic Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, a pottery studio with over 400 years of tradition in producing delicate and elegant porcelain. A hallmark of Mikawachi-yaki, this piece reflects the kiln’s enduring commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and hand-painted detail.

Formed from Amakusa pottery stone, which is rich in purity and low in iron content, the teacup features a bright white porcelain body ideal for intricate blue decoration. Firing at high temperatures intensifies the gosu blue pigment and results in a silky, smooth finish. A transparent glaze enhances both the vivid blue and the crisp contrast against the white base, bringing the design to life.

Every teacup is individually painted by hand using a complex pre-firing technique that requires exceptional precision and skill.

Pattern:
Hirado Tokusa Raimon – This distinctive design combines vertical double lines symbolizing Tokusa (horsetail plant) with square line motifs known as Raimon (thunder pattern). These elements are rendered in fine, controlled strokes that highlight the visual harmony between indigo blue and white porcelain.

Usage Precautions:
• Slight variations in glaze flow and finish are a natural part of the hand-firing process.

• Avoid using chipped or cracked items, as they may be hazardous.

• Rinse promptly after use, dry thoroughly, and store in a dry place.

• Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleansers to maintain the painted surface.

What is Mikawachi-yaki?
Originating in Nagasaki during the Edo period, Mikawachi-yaki was developed in goyōgama kilns to create fine porcelain gifts for the ruling Hirado domain. With a focus on artistry over efficiency, these kilns produced highly detailed pieces sought after by nobility. Since the Meiji era, Mikawachi ware has remained a symbol of precision and elegance, valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
