This flat plate is crafted by the historic Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, a workshop with over 400 years of expertise in producing refined and graceful porcelain. It exemplifies the enduring beauty of Mikawachi-yaki, a traditional ceramic art form known for its meticulous craftsmanship and subtle elegance.

The plate is made using Amakusa pottery stone, prized for its low iron content—ideal for creating pure white porcelain. High-temperature firing enhances the smoothness of the glaze and the vibrancy of the deep blue gosu pigment. A transparent overglaze further accentuates the clarity of the white base and the precision of the hand-painted design.

Each piece is painted entirely by hand, using a skilled technique that involves applying the blue decoration before firing—a process that demands extraordinary craftsmanship and control.

Pattern:
Hirado Seikaiha – The Seikaiha (blue ocean wave) motif is a traditional symbol of peace and calm. Rendered with delicate, rhythmic brushstrokes, this pattern reflects the high level of technique characteristic of Hirado Matsuyama Kiln’s artisans. Each wave is hand-painted with remarkable detail, making every plate unique.

Usage Precautions:
• Variations in glaze or color flow may occur due to differences in kiln placement and temperature—this is a natural part of handcrafted porcelain.

• Do not use chipped or cracked items, as they may pose safety risks.

• Clean promptly after use, dry thoroughly, and store in a moisture-free environment.

• Avoid abrasive scrubbers or cleansers to prevent surface damage.

What is Mikawachi-yaki?
Originating in Nagasaki during the Edo period, Mikawachi-yaki was developed in goyōgama kilns to create fine porcelain gifts for the ruling Hirado domain. With a focus on artistry over efficiency, these kilns produced highly detailed pieces sought after by nobility. Since the Meiji era, Mikawachi ware has remained a symbol of precision and elegance, valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
