This flat plate is crafted by the renowned Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, a pottery workshop with a 400-year heritage of creating delicate and elegant porcelain. The piece exemplifies the timeless beauty of Mikawachi-yaki, a tradition rooted in precision and artistry.

Made from Amakusa pottery stone, known for its low iron content, the plate features a brilliant white porcelain body ideal for showcasing intricate designs. High-temperature firing enhances the depth of the gosu blue pigment and creates a smooth, refined texture. A transparent glaze accentuates the vivid blue hues while revealing the delicate, hand-drawn linework with clarity and depth.

Each design is hand-painted using an expert technique in which the solid blue decoration is applied to the unfired surface—a process requiring exceptional skill and precision.

Pattern:
Presented Karako – A distinguished motif in Mikawachi ware, the Karako-e pattern was traditionally offered as tribute to the shogunate and imperial court. Variations of this design include playful children (karako), pine trees, rock peonies, auspicious motifs (enwahomon), and traditional games.

Usage Precautions:
• Glaze irregularities and variations in finish may occur due to differences in kiln position and firing temperature—these are natural marks of handmade craftsmanship.

• Avoid using chipped or cracked items to prevent injury.

• After use, rinse promptly, dry thoroughly, and store in a dry environment.

• Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleansers to maintain surface integrity.

What is Mikawachi-yaki?
Originating in Nagasaki during the Edo period, Mikawachi-yaki was developed in goyōgama kilns to create fine porcelain gifts for the ruling Hirado domain. With a focus on artistry over efficiency, these kilns produced highly detailed pieces sought after by nobility. Since the Meiji era, Mikawachi ware has remained a symbol of precision and elegance, valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
