This teacup is produced by the esteemed Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, which has upheld a 400-year legacy of crafting refined and elegant porcelain. It exemplifies the artistry of Mikawachi-yaki, aa style known for its exceptional detail, delicate forms, and pure white finish.

Made from Amakusa pottery stone, this porcelain has a naturally low iron content, allowing for a brilliant white base. High-temperature firing enhances both the texture and the richness of the blue gosu pigment. A transparent glaze brings out the vivid contrast between white and blue, revealing hand-painted details with remarkable clarity. Each piece is painted by hand using a complex pre-firing technique, where solid blue decoration is applied with precision—a skill requiring years of mastery.

Pattern:

Presented Karako – A distinguished motif of Mikawachi ware, the Karako-e design features children (karako) engaged in playful scenes, often surrounded by pine trees, rock peonies, enwahomon, and traditional games. Once offered as gifts to the shogunate and imperial court, this pattern embodies the heritage and refinement of Edo-period porcelain.

Usage Precautions:
• Natural variations in glaze flow or color may result from kiln placement—these are hallmarks of hand-fired porcelain.

• Avoid using cracked or chipped items, as they may pose safety risks.

• Rinse promptly after use, dry completely before storing, and avoid soaking.

• Do not scrub with abrasive materials to protect the surface design.

What is Mikawachi-yaki?
Originating in Nagasaki during the Edo period, Mikawachi-yaki was developed in goyōgama kilns to create fine porcelain gifts for the ruling Hirado domain. With a focus on artistry over efficiency, these kilns produced highly detailed pieces sought after by nobility. Since the Meiji era, Mikawachi ware has remained a symbol of precision and elegance, valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
