This refined mug hails from the historic Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, which has been producing delicate and elegant ceramics for over 400 years. A hallmark of Mikawachi-yaki porcelain, the mug is crafted using Amakusa pottery stone, renowned for its low iron content—ideal for creating luminous white porcelain.

Fired at high temperatures, the porcelain develops a smooth, glass-like surface, while the blue gosu pigment becomes richer and more vibrant. A transparent glaze enhances the contrast between the pristine white base and the intricate blue designs. Each piece is hand-painted using advanced techniques, including the precise application of solid blue coloring before firing—an artisanal skill requiring years of experience.

Pattern:
Presented Karako – A traditional motif from Mikawachi ware, this style features children (karako) playing among pine trees, rock peonies, and auspicious patterns. Once presented to the shogunate and imperial court during the Edo period, this design embodies the legacy and formality of historic Japanese porcelain.

Usage Precautions:
• Variations in glaze flow and color may occur due to kiln placement and firing temperature—these are natural features of handcrafted ceramics.

• Avoid using chipped or cracked items, as they may pose safety risks.

• After use, rinse promptly and dry thoroughly before storing.

• Do not scrub with metal scourers or harsh cleansers to prevent scratching.

What is Mikawachi-yaki?
Originating in Nagasaki during the Edo period, Mikawachi-yaki was developed in goyōgama kilns to create fine porcelain gifts for the ruling Hirado domain. With a focus on artistry over efficiency, these kilns produced highly detailed pieces sought after by nobility. Since the Meiji era, Mikawachi ware has remained a symbol of precision and elegance, valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
